Miss Sarawan – Cambodian Fusion

MEALEA LAY’S singing career began within the walls of a Phnom Penh temple where she sought refuge after travelling from her small rice-growing village in Kampong Cham Province. The monks at Wat Sarawan encouraged the diminutive diva with 5000 riel per song. Mealea doesn’t live in the temple anymore, but she still spends her days intoning the rich Khmer catalog, with a voice that evokes the fragile beauty of a Houy Meas or Ros Seryesothea. Along the way she has teamed up with country bumpkin Joe Wrigley, who offers acoustic guitar backing and cowboy counterpoint.

Miss Sarawan Band is an elegant new musical fusion of the traditional and the modern, Cambodian and Western. The vocals of twin sisters Mealea and Mealai evoke the fragile beauty of Cambodian ‘Golden Era’ stars like Houy Meas or Ros Seryesothea. The beautiful and lyrical sound of the Tro (sometimes described as the ‘Khmer Violin’) brings a traditional feel to the Sarawan sound. UK musician Joe Wrigley drives the music forward with pressing acoustic guitar, while percussionist KCM Nayabinghi brings a very funky rhythmical feel. Together, the band perform a fun mix of Cambodian rock’n’roll classics and beautiful original compositions.

Rich Pearl

The stage is dark. Suddenly the audience hears something that does not quite fit: a banjo playing Latin music? The spotlight flashes across the stage, but almost not fast enough to catch the performer who is dancing, making eyes at the ladies in the audience and playing the banjo all at the same time. Richard Pearl is the name of this athletic banjoist–all teeth, eyes, curly hair, an impish smile and movement, however, not in typical flashy banjo attire but in an elegant tuxedo.

Susi and The Edelweiss: ‘Bavarian Party Music’

Live saxophone and vocals with pre-recorded backing tracks. Oktoberfest beer festival music, pop and rock classic songs. This act travels around the world playing this music at festivals and large events. Very entertaining and upbeat act for party audience. Audience participation encouraged!

Joe Wrigley

STYLE: 1950’s-style Rockabilly – emphasis on show, party, dancing music.

UK singer-songwriter Joe Wrigley has taken his guitar all around the world looking for musicians to share his love of Rockabilly music.

The band Joe Wrigley & The Jumping Jacks is the result of one man’s obsession with a certain period of Rock’n’Roll history in between the energetic Country music of Hank Williams and the British Beat Groups of the early 1960’s.

Joe continues to search for the magical 1950’s sound of Gene VincentEddie Cochran and Buddy Holly that never fails to fill the dance floor and bring a smile to the audience.

JOE WRIGLEY has also put together a great new trio act called The Blue Berry Moon boys. (see our trio section for more info)
